Colville Recreation Center: Mural of Values
While Frances Wyatt was still alive and
director of the Colville (now Frances Wyatt)
Recreation Center, she discussed with
Frances McDonald the idea of a mural on
her building and what would be a suitable
theme.  Wyatt brought up the idea of values,
that the youth today needed to think about
what was important to  them.  A year and a
half later, Frances McDonald received a
grant to expedite the late Frances Wyatt's
wishes.  Fifteen artists (7-12 years old)
were asked the question: which value was
most important to them, which quality did
they seek most in their friendships...the
question was asked in many ways until each
one had one or two values in mind.  They
were then challenged to create an image that
corresponded with the value words (like an
apple image with the word "health").  Image
and word were then painted on the building
in a collage sort of way.  The artists worked
about 12 hours to complete approximately
700 square feet of paint.

This project was funded in part by an Arts
Build Chattanooga Neighborhoods Grant of
the Allied Arts of Greater Chattanooga and a
Community Development Block Grant from
the City of Chattanooga.
