Jax Liquor Store: Don't Drink and Drive
Conceived from a dream, Frances
approached Lisa Andrews, liquor
store owner, with the concept of
painting the consequences of drinking
and driving on the facade of Jax.
Family and Children Services, a
non-profit agency that, among other
things, houses teens who either have
alcohol and/or drug problems or have
parents that do, was interested in
having teenagers from their group
homes participate in this project.
Other teens were selected from an
application process.  A team of
twenty  working with facillitators
McDonald and Jeff Cannon, painted
the walls for ten days in October
1999.  The mural wraps the building
and stretches into the parking lot
creating a semi trompe l'oeil effect.  A
generous reformed alcoholic made a
donation that was matched by an Arts
in Education grant from Allied Arts of
Greater Chattanooga to create the
$2500. budget.

In 2005, the owners of Jax Liquor Store
ceded to the bank's demand to "look
more like a liquor store." They
subsequently painted over their mural,
much to neighborhood chagrin.
